Male Survivors

Therapy for male survivors of sexual trauma in Market Harborough

If you are a man who has experienced rape, sexual assault or childhood sexual abuse, you may have carried it alone for a long time. Many men tell no one for years. You might not even call it abuse yet. You may simply know that something is wrong: sleep that won't come, anger that feels too big, numbing with alcohol or drugs, or a sense of shame you can't explain.

You do not have to carry this alone, and you do not have to be ready to talk about all of it.

Why work with me

I am one of very few male therapists in the Market Harborough area who specialises in male sexual trauma. Every week I work with male survivors through First Step Leicester, one of only five charities in the UK dedicated to men affected by sexualised trauma.

Before becoming a psychotherapist I spent four decades as a Senior Police Officer and a Registered Nurse. I have sat with people in the aftermath of the hardest moments of their lives. Nothing you tell me will shock me, and you will not be judged.

Closure without disclosure

Many men worry that therapy means describing what happened in detail. It doesn't have to. I offer the Rewind Technique, a calm, guided visualisation that helps the brain file a traumatic memory as something in the past, without you needing to describe the details out loud. Research on it is promising and growing, and I use it as one tool among several.

How we will work together

We start with an assessment and decide together what is most likely to help. I follow UK Psychological Trauma Society guidance and Dr Judith Herman's three-phase model of recovery:

  1. Safety and stabilisation: managing flashbacks, sleep problems and overwhelming feelings first.
  2. Processing: working through memories carefully, at your pace, only when you are ready.
  3. Reconnection: rebuilding trust in yourself, your relationships and your future.

Alongside this I may draw on trauma-focused CBT, IFS-informed parts work and hypnotherapy, always with your agreement.

Where and how

Face-to-face sessions take place at MindTalk, 3 Abbey Street, Market Harborough. I also offer online sessions by Google Meet and telephone sessions anywhere in the UK. I offer a free introductory conversation so you can see whether working with me feels right.
