How I will work with you

Pluralistic approach

Pluralistic practice offers a flexible and client-centred approach that tailors the therapeutic experience to the unique needs of each individual. By combining various therapeutic methods and techniques, pluralistic therapy allows clients to explore different perspectives and tools that resonate with them, enhancing their self-understanding and personal growth. This supportive framework empowers clients to take an active role in their therapy, promoting a sense of agency and collaboration with their therapist. The primary modalities I deploy are explained in more detail below.

My therapeutic practice rests on substantial clinical knowledge, rigorous training and more than 40 years’ direct operational experience within the Police service and the NHS. Those demanding professional contexts, combined with my own personal recovery, have produced a distinctive dual perspective on the complexities of psychological trauma. I do not regard clients as “broken” or in need of repair; rather, I recognise and respect adaptive survival strategies. I specialise in supporting people through the multifaceted consequences of Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS), Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD), developmental trauma and vicarious or secondary traumatisation, offering a contained, compassionate environment that prioritises restoration of agency and durable wellbeing.

To uphold the highest standards of clinical safety and efficacy, my practice adheres to the UK Psychological Trauma Society (UKPTS) standards, where I have held active membership since 2022. I apply the ‘Guidelines for the Treatment and Planning of Services for Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Adults’ together with applicable NICE guidance. Recovery is organised according to the three-phase model formulated by Dr Judith Herman: establishing safety and stabilisation, carefully processing traumatic memories and progressing towards reconnection with a strengthened, autonomous future. This evidence-informed model ensures therapy is collaborative, methodical and clinically robust. It is underpinned by current research and ongoing professional supervision and training.

Other techniques

As a pluralistic therapist, I utilise a range of methodologies to support your personal development. You can have confidence that any techniques employed will be implemented only with your explicit consent. The approaches I may incorporate include:

Hypnotherapy

As a qualified and registered hypnotherapist, I employ effective techniques aimed at fostering deeper emotional healing and facilitating personal growth. Hypnotherapy is a valuable complement to traditional psychotherapy, enabling clients to explore their subconscious mind, uncover underlying issues, and implement meaningful changes in their behaviours and thought patterns. By integrating both methodologies, I strive to provide a holistic and personalised therapeutic experience tailored to the unique needs of each individual. My expertise in hypnotherapy enhances my ability to support clients on their journey towards mental well-being and self-discovery.

ACT

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) aims to enhance psychological flexibility by encouraging individuals to embrace their thoughts and feelings rather than fighting or avoiding them. Central to ACT is the concept of accepting one's inner experiences while committing to actions that align with personal values. ACT empowers individuals to recognise the transient nature of their thoughts and emotions, enabling them to live more fully in the present moment. This approach is particularly beneficial for those struggling with anxiety, depression, and stress-related issues, as it promotes resilience and fosters a meaningful life in accordance with one's core beliefs and aspirations.

Internal Family Systems

My practice is IFS-informed, drawing on the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model and parts work to support clients navigating trauma, anxiety and stress. Having completed the IFSI Online Circle foundation training, IFS for Complex Trauma and extensive independent study, I integrate these concepts thoughtfully where appropriate to help you understand, connect with, and heal your internal system.Internal Family Systems (IFS), is a transformative, non-pathologising approach that views your mind as a 'family' of various sub-personalities or 'parts'. Life experiences and trauma can push these parts into extreme roles—some may become 'protectors' that manage anxiety or perfectionism, while others carry the weight of past wounds. The goal of our work isn’t to eliminate these parts, but to connect with your 'Self'—a core essence within you that remains undamaged and is full of curiosity, calm, and compassion. By leading from this core Self, we can help your internal system find harmony, allowing your parts to release their heavy burdens and move toward lasting healing.

Trauma Focused CBT

I have a level 2 in Trauma-Focused CBT provided by the Association for Psychological Therapies.Trauma-Informed Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapeutic approach that recognises the impact of trauma on an individual's mental health and overall well-being. It integrates an understanding of the effects of trauma into the therapy process, ensuring that clients feel safe, empowered, and supported. This approach helps clients process their trauma by addressing their thoughts, behaviours, and emotional responses in a gentle and non-intrusive manner. By incorporating trauma-informed principles, therapists can create a safe environment where clients are encouraged to express their feelings and experiences without fear of re-traumatisation. Consequently, trauma-informed CBT can significantly benefit clients who have experienced trauma by fostering resilience, enhancing coping strategies, and ultimately aiding in recovery and personal growth.

Person centered therapy

Person-centred therapy significantly underscores the importance of attentive listening to the client, acknowledging that each individual harbours distinct experiences and insights that shape their therapeutic journey. The therapist cultivates a supportive atmosphere that enables clients to express their thoughts and emotions without reservation. By actively listening and affirming the client’s viewpoint, the therapist contributes to the development of a robust therapeutic alliance, which is crucial for effective healing and personal development. A client-led approach is pivotal in person-centred psychotherapy, as it empowers individuals to assume control over their own healing process. This autonomy allows clients to navigate their emotions and challenges at a comfortable pace, thereby fostering deeper self-awareness and insight.

Cognitive behavioural therapy

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an effective form of psychotherapy that focuses on the interconnections between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. By helping individuals identify and challenge negative thought patterns, CBT empowers them to develop healthier perspectives and responses to their circumstances. This process often involves practical strategies aimed at changing maladaptive behaviours that contribute to emotional distress. Ultimately, CBT helps individuals build resilience and equips them with the skills needed to navigate life's challenges more effectively.

Psychodynamic therapy

Psychodynamic therapy is a vital form of psychotherapy that emphasises the exploration of an individual’s past to better understand their present behaviours and emotions. By delving into early life experiences and unconscious processes, clients can uncover patterns that influence their current relationships and mental health. This approach posits that unresolved conflicts and repressed memories often manifest as psychological distress in adulthood. Therefore, by examining these underlying issues, individuals can gain insight and develop healthier coping mechanisms, ultimately leading to improved emotional well-being and a more fulfilling life.
